Naples – Italy

September 2, 2017

Naples (Italian name Napoli) 3rd largest and oldest city in Italy — after Rome and Milan. The historic city center, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, has long been renowned for its beauty. You will also read some negative information about Naples about the crime and unemployment rate.

We had a long weekend: best part of the trip was meeting close friends and travelling to Capri island.

My recommendation for accommodation is to stay little bit outside old city, mainly in the area of Riveiera di Chiaia. This part of city is better organised and closed to the seaside. You will have the “Sightseeing Napoli” bus tours, blue line is driving from the city, through the coast line, view from Posillipo hill is breathtaking.

The bus tour costs 23 Euro per 24 hours and have 4 different routes to explore the city.

Old Town
Walking in the old town to explore the beautiful churches (Santa Chiara, Gesù Nuovo, Sansevero Chapel,..).

Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I and walking though Via Toledo for shopping.

Castel dell`Ovo (Egg castle)

The castle’s name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation in medieval times as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future. In the legend, Virgil put a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications. Had this egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disastrous events for Naples would have followed.

The place we most enjoyed is the seaside at Chiara area and to San Fernando, there are very good restaurants here with castle view. Recommended for early evening and night.

Sant Elmo castle has good 360 panorama view, but we did not have the time visit here.

To eat and drink
-Napoli Pizza is well known, is made with tomatoes from the area and mozzarella cheese. There are special pizza schools around.
-Baba or sfogliatella is sweet pastry. Italian eat in the breakfast baba with espresso or caffe nocciolato (almond caffe). The pastry shops are everywhere and the taste is really good.
-Italian ice cream is my favourite, go to Fantasia Gelati at via Toledo
-Limoncello and meloncello are very delicious digestive drinks.

Swim near to city: Bagno Elena. It is still on the blue bus tour route, a nice city beach.

Day trip to Capri island
It takes only one hour by speed boat to go to Capri. The speed boats are at Molo Beverello. Costs are around 22 Euro one direction. Molo Beverello pier is located in front of Maschio Angioino in the Piazza Municipio.
Another option is slower ferries from the Calata di Massa pier is located further east (to the left, facing the sea).

At Capri island, you arrive to Marina Grande.

Best is to arrive early and make an island tour; also a boat to Blue cave (Grotta Azzurra). We arrived afternoon and just took a taxi to go to the other side of the island to Marina Piccola (small marina).

Capri houses

Capri is my favourite place, would be great to stay here a few days and enjoy the island. You can also use the cable car from Marina Grande to city of Capri and astonishing view from there.

South of Italy and Napoli is good travel destination. There are always different options to discover around, especially like Capri island. The mount Vesuvius, an active volcano and famous in history with its eruption is in the area. Another option is driving at beautiful Amalfi coast.
