Klapedia – Lithuania

August 11, 2016

Klapedia is Lithuanias third largest city, located in the north-western corner of the country.  This is a very cozy place with unforgettable medieval atmosphere, delicious food, and hospitable people. Perfect choice for long weekend travel, especially in spring or summer.

DFDS is the company where you can buy the ferry tickets online from Sweden. They also offer mini package holidays with reasonable price including the hotel.

The ferry leaves at 19:00, check in starts two hours earlier. The passengers was last to be accepted to the boat.

Arrival to Klaipeda is early morning. The international terminal at Klaipeda is only 10-15 minutes from the city centre.  It costs around 3-4 Euros to the city centre.

We preferred to stay an apartment, Stora Antis, in the middle of centre, old town (can be booked in Booking.com). The Dane River and the boat Meridianas is just in front of us.  The room is decorated antique style, is very clean and comfortable. The owner has four apartments in this building and he is personally giving all touristic information and recommendations. He also has a restaurant on the opposite site of the street, same name: Stora Antis.

The view from the hotel window:

Time to walk in the city. First stop is sculpture park, where 116 sculptures are located. The whole town is famous with different interesting sculptures. (the most famous ones are a mouse, cat, dragon, basket with coins, mermaid and the black ghost)

In the new town, we have stopped for a lunch, in most busy street Herkus Manto Gatve, Flamingo.

After the lunch (with local fish), we walked back to the old town. It is convenient to walk around in the old town. There are nice German style buildings as well as nice cafes.

In the evening, time of the blue hour, there are very good locations for photography, all are 2 minutes from the hotel:)

For dinner, Stora Antis is a very good choice. Underground, antique decoration, 4-6 tables, relaxing music and excellent food. My recommendation is either lamb (long cooked) or home made dumplings.

After dinner, time for live music, Bluez bar, next to river, 2 minutes from the restaurant.

Second day, visit the shopping mall Akropolis.

Third day, a boat trip from the old ferry terminal to Smiltyne (Curonian Spit). This place a national park and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The boat is every hour, winter time. (During summer, both the boat and the bus to Nida is more frequent). It is an option to rent a bike and discover the sand dunes and beaches. . We had a short walk from the Smiltyne ferry to the other side of the spit, long sand beach.

Dinner in Friedricho Pasazas in the old town.

Time to return to ferry, the check is starting from 18:00 and the boat leaves at 21:00.
